December 17, 2012 The Iskandar Investment Board (IIB) is moving to sell operating assets in Johor in order to support the next stage of development in Iskandar Malaysia. A change of strategy is being adopted by IIB in order to find greater flexibility in the next stage of development. The Board said that it is willing to sell some of its operating assets in Johor in order to support the development of several new clusters in Iskandar Malaysia. “What we would get is immediate sale of our properties, which will be quite useful to fund our next catalytic projects. The next stage of growth for IIB would be self-driven,” said Datuk Syed Mohamed Syed Ibrahim, President and CEO of IIB. “All the while we thought we would fund catalyst projects using our own sources. December 13, 2012 Out of RM 105 billion in total cumulative investment in Iskandar Malaysia, real estate contributed the largest share at RM 35.1 billion. Iskandar Malaysia managed to pull in RM 20.36 billion in committed investment for the first 11 months of the year, bringing the total cumulative investment in the special development zone in Johor to RM 105.14 billion so far. Real estate proved to be the most popular, with the sector contributing the largest share of committed investment at RM 35.1 billion. This was followed by the manufacturing sector at RM 33.9 billion and the utilities sector at RM 9.5 billion, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak. He noted that domestic investors accounted for 64% – or RM 67.79 billion – of the cumulative committed investment, while foreign investors accounted for the remaining 36% – or RM 37.45 billion. December 6, 2012 Singaporean billionaire Peter Lim has announced a new Formula One-compliant circuit as part of a planned motorsport-themed project, and has also indicated plans for further investment. A deal involving the development of a motorsports-themed commercial and entertainment complex, Motorsport City, in Iskandar, Johor, has been confirmed by Singaporean billionaire Peter Lim. The project will include the construction of a new Formula One-compliant circuit measuring 4.5 km that will be designed by an as-yet-unnamed F1 Track designer, said Lim. The gross development value of Motorsport City is estimated at RM 3.5 billion. The project is a joint venture between Lim's FASTrack Autosports Pte Ltd and Malaysian developer UEM Land Holdings Bhd, with the former holding a 70% stake, and the latter, 30%. December 3, 2012 Tang Group unit Global Skyline Sdn Bhd will embark on an RM 750 million development comprising hotel, shophouses and residential components in Iskandar Malaysia. Iskandar Malaysia in Johor has secured an investment estimated at RM 750 million from Singapore-based Tang Group of Companies. Through subsidiary Global Skyline Sdn Bhd, Tang Group will undertake its iMedini Walk mixed-use project on three plots spanning 3.2 ha. An agreement has been signed with Medini Land Sdn Bhd for a 99-year lease for the three plots, which would generate over 1.38 million sq ft in gross floor area (GFA) in total. The project, located along the spine road leading to the Mall of Medini and Legoland Malaysia, will offer residential, hotel and commercial space. The latter will take the form of about 150 three-storey strata shophouse units with an average GFA of 3,300 sq ft each. November 16, 2012 A mixed-use high-end commercial and residential development costing billions of ringgit has been planned for Sungai Tebrau in Johor Bahru. Sungai Tebrau in Johor Bahru has been identified as the site of a planned multi-billion ringgit waterfront development that will comprise high-end commercial and residential units. The project, to be located near the Permas Jaya bridge, will also include a new international ferry terminal. The waterfront development is being overseen by Tebrau Teguh Bhd, which said that the project is in its planning stage right now. The company also plans to offer water taxi services connecting Johor Bahru and Singapore, as well as ferry services to nearby Indonesian islands. According to executive vice-chairman Tan Sri Lim Kang Hoo, Tebrau Teguh will commence land reclamation work covering 40.46 ha in 2013. The firm is a unit of Distinctive Group, which was set up in 2011 to tap development opportunities in Johor, with a focus on Iskandar Malaysia. Distinctive Ace has agreed to purchase a leasehold plot spanning 18.05 acres in Medini from Iskandar Investment Bhd (IIB) subsidiary Medini Land Sdn Bhd. The deal is valued at RM 99.92 million. Johor's popular Desaru Beach will see the rise of a new tourism and entertainment development with an estimated gross development value (GDV) of RM 5 billion. DRH has commenced Phase One development works for its Desaru Coast project, which will be completed in 2015. The Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) will offer incentives to developers to restore abandoned projects in the city. Incentives such as a 50 percent discount on fees for building plan submission and improvement service funds, as well as on building charges and waiver of deposits will be given by the MBJB to developers. IRDA Is Sole Decision-making Authority Over Investments In IDR KUALA LUMPUR, May 17 (Bernama) -- The Iskandar Regional Development Authority is the sole decision-making body on all issues pertaining to both domestic and foreign investments flowing into the region, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said today. "Be they local or foreign direct investments from all sources including Singapore, it is the IRDA which will have jurisdiction over issues pertaining to investments," he said.
